Hair Journey - The Beginning.

{the good ol' uni days}
A couple days ago I declared the beginning of my new hair regiment on Facebook. I had spent the previous night watching Megz's YouTube videos from U Love Megz and ended up going to bed past 1am cos I couldn't get over her beautiful hair! I wanted, needed even, to know her secret.

If you've read the "About Me" section of my blog (see top right), then you probably already know that I want my hair to be so long that it easily rests right below my breasts. For about a year now that has been my dream but until two days ago it was just one of those dreams that you hope for but never really imagine realising.. Sorta like how you pray for that nasty tooth ache to disappear without having to go to the dentist, you know?

Cue Megz and her amaaazing mane.
Hope was restored.
The angels were singing, trumpets were booming and confetti was falling from the ceiling.
There was a party in my head you guys, a magical party.

Hope you don't mind but I'll be sharing my hair journey on here.. If you're not particularly interested in all the products and portions I'll be whipping up here then I suggest just ignoring these posts! I'll make sure the title has "Hair Journey" on there so that you know which post to glide right past.

Each week I'll be giving an update on what I've been doing to my hair, the products I'm using and the progress thereof. It's going to be fun you guys, you just wait.

{no, not naked. yes, had a towel.}

The new hair regiment I'm taking up will involve:
  1. Some co-washing (only using conditioners to wash your hair)
  2. NO HOT TOOLS except for once a month - goodness me, this is definitely going to be the hardest..
  3. Air Drying hair
  4. Pre-pooing (applying some oils to your hair pre-shampoo)
  5. Moisturizing and sealing
  6. Using natural oils such as olive, avocado, coconut, castor and jojoba oil
  7. Wearing protective hair styles more often (like buns and french braids)
  8. Lots of deep conditioning (moisture-based treatments)
  9. Protein-based treatments
  10. Regular trimming (but ONLY of split ends)
AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
I'm so excited! I kid you not, my heart is beating so fast as I write this!!!
Ok, I'm going to go now and research more on all things hair.
Bye.

p.s.: the pictures are from at least 1.5 to 2yrs old. Doesn't look like I've changed one bit.

  4. Oh wow, no hot tools. I seriously cannot go one day without using my straightener. Is your hair naturally curly?

Mine is naturally curly/wavy/frizzy so if I don't at least straighten my fringe then I have this weird frizzy wave thing going on.

    1. Yes Rhi, yesterday I washed my hair and didn't blow dry it. It felt SO AWKWARD..

My hair is naturally curly and by that I mean so-curly-its-pretty-much-a-tangled-mess curly. It's cray.

  6. I am obsessed with my hair. Especially since I went natural a few years ago, some days we fight but other days I looooove it! I'm not really great with hair blogs but I am great with hair so I'll try to keep up and maybe we could swap ideas =)

    1. Really?? That's awesome! I don't think I could ever go natural.. I still have the mentality that natural hair is soo difficult to deal with because of how mine used to be. I KNOW this isn't the case especially when you take care of it but I can't shake that idea!

So what are some of your secrets to keeping it soft? I need to learn how to manage my growth :)

  7. Hi Ess, i remember a post you did about hair sometime back and it looked like you were doing the right things, so this will be a breeze for you. Am also on a hair journey and i blog about it. It kinda helps keep track of things. So blog away about all things hair...can't wait to read! oh and the no hot tools issue, my advise, go for curly styles if you can and buns. All the best!

    1. I actually wasn't! Well not really. My new hair regiment is something I want to be dedicated to and I never used to take it seriously..
I think the hardest thing will definitely be keeping away from blow driers and flat irons - I ALWAYS use these hot tools!

I'm definitely embracing buns though :) And french braids and fishtail braids and all sorts of loose braids!

Glad I have a few people on a similar journey!
Glad I have a few people on here with the same sorta obsession with hair!

    1. I want to LOVE my hair too!! I see these YouTube gurus talk about their hair and treat it like it's their baby and that's what I want for mine!

We're in it to win it :)

    1. I don't think I really know how to take care of mine..yet! Hopefully I'll learn loads about it along the way and get it as long as I want it to be..

Sad you had to cut your hair cos you didn't didn't take care of it but at least you took action! I'm sure you look cute in your bob now :)

  10. Hey good luck on your hair journey, I started mine two months ago and I have experienced very little breakage and am 3 months post relaxer. Coconut and castor oil are my best friends now and I use shea butter to moisturise my ends. I wear my hair in buns but now I have braids coz of the rain and all. Hope to learn and share with you and all the ladies throughout our hair journeys :)

    1. Yeah I've been rocking buns quite a bit too. Can you imagine it's been almost a year since I last put braids? There were times when I couldn't go a month without them.

You know this breakage problem that I'm having is sooo tricky - how can I tell if it's a lot or little? So confusing.

Can't wait to share experiences with all you lovely ladies!

    2. I know ryt? but when you find bits of your hair everywhere you go....now there's a huge problem or when someone is always patting your back to chuck hair...that's how I know ok my hair is pissed at me!

I'm actually shocked I've stayed with braids this long I get tired quick but now am trying to stretch my relaxer for the longest time but moisturizing daily is a must must do :)

Hope your hair has reduced on the breakage?

  12. include a conditioning detangler as well after deep conditioning..it helps a whole lot.then use a heat protector for the times you decide to flat iron or blow dry your hair .
In the period that you decide to retouch your new growth, ensure that your hair is sealed in oil(coconut or olive oil)to protect from the relaxer when it is being washed out :)) its my first time to check out your blog..totally love it :) xxx
