Blazer - Meltz (SA); Strapless top - Zebu; Pants - Toi Market; Wedges - Jet; Clutch - Kariokor Market; Necklace - Olamide Kenya; Studs - Woolworths;
I had actually intended on stepping out in these wedges but changed my mind just before leaving the house (but after the pictures were taken) and wore some Maasai sandals that had black and gold bead-work.
I'm all for supporting local designers!
At the risk of sounding a little vain, I have to say that I absolutely adore this outfit but only because of the fact that both the clutch and the strapless top were made in Kenya.
Just typing those words makes my heart smile a little.
I got the top for KES 1,000 (roughly $12) at Zebu in Junction Mall. You should check it out! The top was actually in the kids section and was meant to be worn as a skirt but hey, if it doubles as a top I'm all for it.
The clutch was KES 600 (roughly $8).
I'm sure that there are loads of Kenyan designers out there who have brilliant pieces in their collection but so far, Zebu and Kidosho have been the ones to make my heart go boom boom pow with their amazing designs. Can't wait to discover other designers' pieces!
What Kenyan designers have you fallen in love with?
And if you're not from Kenya, how often do you purchase items made by your local designers?
I'd love to know!
Oh by the way, if ever there was a top that was ideal for a major, and I mean majah, stuff-your-tummy-with-food session, This Is It.
Typically I design my own stuff and have it made whenever possible but I frequent Zebu and Venerable Beads when I visit. I'm all for supporting African designers in general and right now I am loving UK based Ohema Ohene especially their hightop sneakers. {Swoon. I think I'm in Love!!!} And how can I forget My Asho!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea behind My Asho - just brilliant! I wonder whether many Kenyan designers know about it..
DeleteAre you a fashion designer?!
That would be a brilliant idea. I wouldn't call myself a fashion designer but honestly, I should be one. lol
DeleteAnd here I thought I am the only 20 sommething year old that shops in the juniors section (atleast in the US thats where I find myself mostly at) I really love the top -sorry kiddies skirt..( I can only imagine mothers at Zebu were giving you the eye, wondering what this woman is upto forcing herself into a child's skirt)
ReplyDeleteThe only african stuff I own are jewellery, heck I'm not even sure if they were made in Kenya or China, lol. Oh oh but I do have 2 lovely modern kitenges made here in Kenya, got them tailored specifically plus the design for my body by mum's tailor. The extra material was used to make a boob tube dress. I must say he did a good job cause atleast I don't look like a mama when I wear them :)
P.s. Love the side braid :)
Girl you'd be surprised by how many of us shop in that section!! Some of those girls' stuff are just ridiculously cute.
DeleteNeema up there recommended a great site if you're interested in more African designs --> http://myasho.com/Welcome
Are you Kenyan but living in the US?
I am Kenyan but used to be based in SA few years back (studied high school and uni). The visits to the US were just to see extended family and there was a period in my life (and I really miss that time )I stayed in New York as an intern for a month). Now I am fully back in Kenya for 2 years now, got a job offer here and might just settle.
DeleteMyasho seems cool, I sure hope they deliver to Kenya, thanks for letting me know :)
I only recently discovered your blog and I love eeeet!
ReplyDeleteThanks Anon!! Feel free to drop by again soon :)
DeleteI've found that living abroad has made me love wearing African print accents. I make my own summer dresses, skirts and clutches since it is so hard (and a bit expensive) to get some of the stuff that I love. Plus, those sizes don't fit properly sometimes, especially when the top of you is a different size from your bottom half...
ReplyDeleteThis summer, I armed myself with some khangas and some lapa textile (from Liberia) and a sewing machine...and got some things together. I checked out My Asho...awesome stuff! I recently noticed a shop of sorts called Bahati in a music video...have you been there by chance? And what are your thoughts on their stuff, if you have...cheers!
I remember being so proud of Kenya when I was in SA! I would always want to rock my Kenyan bracelets, especially in the beginning.
DeleteCan't believe you make your own stuff! I admire people like you.
Never heard of Bahati. Just checked out their FB page though and saw they had some tops sorta similar to the one I got from Zebu! They've got some other really cute stuff too..
Thanks Mercy
xo

ReplyDeleteKaroikor Market!
DeleteI always add the stores/markets I get my stuff from under one of the pictures :)
