So
the time has finally come for a length check.
I didn’t think my hair
was so uneven until I took these pictures.
What a shame.
What a shame.
There’s only one
person I fully trust to cut my hair and that’s my friend Aisha. She used to do
it back when I was in uni and now that she’s back in town, she’s the one designated to trim my ends. Sometimes I feel like my hairdresser gets a little scissor
happy.
Anyone else with the same problem?

My hair was just about to reach the fourth purple line but with how uneven it is, it seems I should cut it back to the yellow line for it took look neater and be healthier. I'll just trust Aisha to do as she sees fit though - fingers crossed the trim doesn't turn into an oh-my-God-she-just-took-four-inches-off hair cut.
You know what's weird? My hair always grows slower in the middle. See how my edges are longer? Not sure what that's about and how to prevent that. Hopefully now that I'm wearing buns a lot more it'll help. Fingers crossed for that too.
Now that I've been reading up on hair nutrients and doing my research, I'm much more aware of what sort of products, and specifically ingredients, I should be getting my hands on.
Here's some that I'm currently excited to try out!

Doo Gro Stimulating Growth Oil; Royal Hair Food Moisture Replacement Treatment; Amla Plus Herbal Hair Oil
Whenever I'm looking for hair products - especially moisturisers and leave-in conditioners - I want something with ingredients that I can pronounce and I'm familiar with. Ideally the best kind to use are those that are 100% of that ingredient but now that I'm in the beginning phase of my hair journey, I figure there's no harm in testing out as many products as I can before I figure out what works best for my hair.
~.~
Doo Grow Stimulating Growth Oil - KES690
I got mine at a random store in South B but Connie (Jeff's girlfriend) mentioned that you can get it from Super Cosmetics. I haven't used much of this product but it's quite oily and not something I'd use daily since a little goes a long way.
Love these ingredients!
You can also use it as a hot oil treatment. Double BAM.

Royal Hair Food Moisture Placement Treatment - about KES500.
(got mine from Nakumatt)

I actually bought this product months ago thinking it was actual treatment only to come back home and realise it was hair oil. Boo-freakin-hoo.
I decided to keep it aside till a couple weeks ago when I read through its ingredients and I fell in love all over again. I'm tempted to take small amounts of this product, warm it up and add it into my treatments.

Amla Plus Herbal Hair Oil - KES120
(got mine from Naivas)

I'd never paid much attention to this product because of the fact that it's got an Indian lady on the cover and I assumed, seeing as our hair texture is very different, it's only meant for Indian hair. But lo and behold, this was actually recommended to me by one of the ladies who works at my office and she kept going on and on about how well it worked on her friend!
Pardon the illegible writing but the four main ingredients are Amla, Henna, Aloe Vera and Almond. It does say that prolonged use of their product may lead to a slight darkening of your hair but quite frankly, I would love it if my hair was darker.

I went for FAFA this past weekend and they had gift bags for the guests but the only thing I was interested in was this little sachet. Argan Oil? YES PLEASE.
Has anyone seen this product in stores??
What's funny is that I went to Aisha's house the next day and what do you know, they had just recently got their hands on 100% pure Argan oil. Of course I immediately slapped some onto my hair and let's just say there's a good reason why there's a lot of hullabaloo about this product. I'm definitely going to be getting some for myself.
For those of you who are on one, how's your hair journey going?
Have you used any of these products and if so, what are you thoughts?
If I don't get out of the house in the next 5-6 minutes, I'm definitely going to be late for work. :/

I'm guessing you finally straightened your hair :) Were those rastas you were rocking a few weeks ago :P anyhoo what does the Amla Plus Herbal Hair Oil do? and where can it be bought in Nbi? Indians have such lovely hair and I'm always tempted to follow their hair regimens. lol
ReplyDeleteYeah I relaxed my hair a week ago!
DeleteWell the person who told me about Amla said that it helped with hair growth & thickness. She spoke about it like it was a miracle product haha!
I too feel the same about Indians generally having amazing hair so I'm excited to see what comes of this. Try getting it from Nakumatt!
I also use the Amla oil. Been using it for over a year and its a keeper. You can use it for a hot oil treatment or as a prepoo where you just leave it in your hair for several hours, let it soak in then wash it out. It stimulates the hair follicle encouraging growth due to vitamin C which has anti-inflammatory properties thus preventing dandruff and this provides a healthy environment for hair growth. If your scalp is sore/tender, it will soothe it. It strengthens the hair, adds shine to it and makes it soft. It also strengthens the follicles thus reducing excessive shedding.
DeleteI blogged about it here: http://hairjunkie2011.wordpress.com/2011/12/26/amla-hair-oil/
I prepood using Amla and I loved how it made my hair feel while I was washing it!! So far so good.
DeleteLet's see how it works out after several months of using it..
hey Ess..thanx for the post,a friend of mine has been complaining about her hair lately and i can finally tell her about the products you use to lengthen yours.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to your friend!
DeleteHi Ess, about the Argan Oil, I've seen the relaxer, hair spray and treatments (all by Creme of Nature) at a couple of stores: Tuskys (Tmall), Super Cosmetics on Koinange street, and other beauty shops in town. I think the treatment comes in the same sachet as the pic you posted above, I hear it's great! It goes for Kes.250 I think. I also want to try it out myself.
ReplyDeleteHope this helps!
http://fromcurveswithlove.wordpress.com
I looked for it at Nakumatt Junction yesterday and nada. Will definitely check out the stores you've given me!
DeleteAlthough 250 for that sachet is a little pricey considering I can probably get my hands on a bottle for about KES1,900. I'll check it out regardless and see whether it's a good deal.
Thanks Anita!
xx
Oh and used it on my hair last night after washing and trust me - YOU WANT TO GET YOUR HANDS ON IT.
Deletereally??i guess i should visit tmall soon.am so eager to start my hair regime.coz gal ua hair is loong:-)
DeleteWow it's really grown , congrats Sharon by Feb it will be on the 4th puple line. I'm obsessed with short hair - but it isn't versatile ...but I love it . My scissor happy Aunt cut my hair in 2008 and it was so short I couldn't even tie it ...but I loved it cos I'd get into the shower and clean it and use Venus Leave-in (the old one) and it would become really curly and my Cucu was like in kiuk ...you think you look beautiful like that ... imagine :-). Anyway long story short its long and I put creme of nature on it so i'm having a blast so to speak .
ReplyDeleteYou think so? Thanks Noni! Although by Feb I'm hoping it will be on the yellow line.. Eager much?
Deletehaha, your grandma is a keeper. I'm sure you looked cute though!
I use my thumb and index finger to show my hairdresser how much to trim. Telling him is not enough...he needs to see because a little trim for him could mean 2 inches! He finds this to be rather funny but its necessary.
ReplyDeleteThat w-shape on your ends could indicate breakage at the crown area so be on the look out for that and eliminate it if that's the cause.
I've been on my hair journey for about 13 months now and its going great. I wish more people would join one. Its very worth it.
Stay blessed!
I do that too and yet my hair dresser still goes trim-crazzzy. Aisha is the only one who I trust completely now!
DeleteI never thought of it as breakage around the crown - just assumed that my sides grow faster. I'll pay special attention from now, hopefully that will help.
xx
Really very nice and informative post. I love argan oil product. I use it mostly for my hair but found also that its good to use on the face as treatment before going to bed and in the morning you wake up with a nice glow .

Extra dark Jamaican black castor oil
Yeah especially if you have 100% Argan oil.. you can use it on your skin and hair. Hope to get my hands on it soon!
DeleteHI Ess... looking at your hair products, am reminded of a hair growth accelerator my mum used to buy back in the day --- KAMINOMOTO. I don't what Japanese Herbs they made that stuff from??? It was GOOOD!! And worked amazing!! it literally acceletared hair growth.. NO KIDDING!! they don't make stuff like that anymore... ;(
ReplyDeleteKaminomoto sounds like a drug!! I don't remember it at all..
DeleteI don't think there's any product that actually accelerates hair growth though.. I think in general products and supplements are supposed to help your hair grow healthy and strong hence no breakage which helps with the length!
I'm going to Google it in a bit and see what ingredients it had!
Word! i only trust my cousin to trim my hair some hairdressers are indeed very scissor happy! Self trim perhaps? Would very much like to try the Argan oil and perhaps the neem one too i already have four oils a few extras won't hurt:)
ReplyDeleteDon't end up being a product junkie though lol
DeleteYeah I have to stop with the products soon haha! I'm still not 100% I've found my ideal shampoo and natural oils so might keep testing those out.
DeleteI could never trim my hair myself! For starters, it's not long enough for me to see my ends and do a good job.. That would be a train wreck.
Remember that blog idea? well it materialised http://crowningglorymine.blogspot.com/ still twerking it though:)
DeleteLove your blog! i have locs but a good friend of mine weaves her hair when she needs to give it a break and give it time to grow. It works wonders! especially if the weave is done properly.
ReplyDeleteBefore getting locs i used to wear wigs (tasteful wigs hehehe) when i needed to give my hair a break and trust me, my hair would really grow because of the protective styling. Just throwing my two cents out there............
Thanks Anon!
DeleteI've heard a lot of people talk about weaves and wigs being a great way to protect your hair but I just can't afford the kind of weave I'd like to put on right now.. I'd definitely try out a weave if I could though!
xx
Hi Ess,
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!
Great advice given years ago after medical treatment, my hair was falling off, olive oil, massage onto scalp, it stimulates hair growth. Used it on over-plucked brows as well. Its great on ends and as a treatment. Also wrap the hair and use a silk scarf. Keep it wrapped as much as you can (remove scarf when leaving house :D ) Wrapping reduces the need to use heat to style the hair. Hope this helps.
PS.... I have booked you for my brother! (thought i would let you know)
Njeri
Thanks Njeri!
DeleteBeen using olive oil for a while now and always use a silk scarf before going to bed. I don't use heat except for once a month which I'm actually trying to push to two months since I just recently got my hair relaxed..
Haha! booked me in which sense?
Hey Ess,
DeleteWith all you are doing, the hair is well on its way to great lengths!!
Oh, dont miss the trims, painful, but very important.
Booked....how you ask?? Hmmmmmmm....well....the boyfriend, girlfriend way..... :-)
No way a lovely girl like you should be single!
Note to self.. must tell brother of plans, lol!

Sharon!!! That hair :(... Gosh, I wanted to vomit out of frustration (yes I stole that line from one of your blogs lol) when looking at these pictures. It just keeps growing, you're taking really good care of it!! :) :) :)
ReplyDeleteHey ma, your hair looks awesome and I feel you on the trust-a-trim bit. I had this attitude about my hair where I let pretty much anyone do to it as they pleased, and this included letting my friend trim it (she had no skills) and it ended up being a multiple inch cut. Anyhow, as I have gotten older, I realized the same thing you are picking up at your young age - take care of your hair and it will show its appreciation! I used to use the Doo Gro but after some research which turned me into a horrendous anti-mineral-oil fanatic, I stay away from it. I think this only comes into play if you have natural hair versus relaxed tresses...not sure. I have heard awesome things about the argan oil and I can't wait to try it. Let me know how you like it! On another note, I thought I recognized your face on my friend's (Frankie) instagram as he was professing his undying love for ya! Small world, I thought. Keep on keeping on with your hair!
ReplyDeleteI have gone through this article and this is really very nice and informative. I hope, it will work and give a healthy hair. Herbal hair oi
